Welcome!
Whether you are looking to become a Freemason, or just wish to know more about Freemasonry in North Devon, we hope our website will prove to be both interesting and informative.
Our home is the bustling market town of South Molton which lies to the south of the Exmoor National Park in North Devon. It has a long history as a commercial and trading centre.
Since the first masonic Lodge was founded in the town in 1834, South Molton’s Freemasons have played an active and important role in the life of the community. Today the three Lodges which meet in the town continue to support a wide range of Charities, local Organisations and community Groups.
The current Freemasons’ Hall in New Road is a Grade II listed building which was constructed in 1846. It still retains many original features such as an open fireplace in the main Lodge Room.
What is Freemasonry?
Freemasonry is one of the oldest social and charitable organisations in the world. Its roots lie in the traditions and customs of the medieval stonemasons who built our cathedrals and castles.
Freemasons observe four basic values to guide their progress through life.
Integrity, Friendship, Respect and
Service.
Modern Freemasonry is an open and inclusive organization with around 175,000 members throughout England and Wales. It is one of the largest Charitable organisations in the UK contributing £51.1m to deserving causes in 2020 alone.
Freemasons do not only donate money – more than 18.5 million hours of volunteer work is undertaken by our members in their communities every year.
Membership is open to people from all backgrounds. The organisation’s aim is to empower its members to be the best they can be. It’s about building character, supporting members as individuals, and helping them make a positive contribution to society.
Freemasonry provides a structure for members to come together in pursuit of these common goals. It enables people to make new friendships, develop themselves, and make valuable contributions to charitable causes.
